Road Safety for Runners

Spring is right around the corner and most people are anxious to spend time outside. If you’re a fellow runner, spring means less time spent on the treadmill and more time running outdoors. However, as more runners take to the roads, chances of potential motor vehicle accidents are greatly increased. A 2009 poll conducted by Runner’s World found that out of 2,400 participants in the poll, 138 runners (six percent) had been hit while running; most sustained only minor injuries or none at all.

The Road Runners Club of America, which represents over 1,000 running clubs across the country, held seminars at their 2009 convention on how runners could lobby local officials for safer roads and specific trails for runners. While some states have passed legislation to protect runners from motorists, runners must still practice their own due diligence in assuring their safety and prevention of personal injury and pedestrian accidents.

Running gear manufacturers have added additional safety products and features to their existing product lines. You can select from headlamps to reflective vests and all the brightly colored clothes in between. In addition to being properly dressed for visibility, it is important to practice additional safety measures while running.

Important Safety Tips for Runners

  • Run against traffic. This gives you and the driver the greatest visibility.
  • Carry a cell phone and identification. Include a name, phone number, and any medical information. Running identification bracelets can be purchased through running stores.
  • DON’T wear headphones. Being able to hear vehicle traffic and your surroundings is vital.
  • Run with a partner. Be sure to run in a single file line if running in a large group.
  • Run on a sidewalk when available.
  • Pause at stoplights and check traffic. Drivers making right hand turns at a red light will be looking for oncoming traffic from the left, not pedestrians.
  • Always remain alert to your surroundings. If you feel uneasy about traffic or certain persons, alter your route.

The best assumption you can make while running is that drivers cannot see you. By following the safety tips above and dressing in brightly colored reflective gear, you will greatly decrease your risk of injury from external factors. Enjoy the sunshine and happy running!
